The Van de Werve brothers
One of the toughest races on earth. Hundreds of kilometres across the Moroccan desert. Pierre took it on with his brother Wauthier, and they ran it for something bigger than a finish line.
The Adventure
Two brothers, one desert.
The Marathon des Sables is around 250 kilometres across six stages in the Moroccan Sahara. Self-supported, which means you carry your own food and kit, a sleeping bag and six days of meals, with water handed out at checkpoints.
Pierre and his brother Wauthier lined up together and made it all the way to the finish. Stage after stage in the heat, one checkpoint at a time, looking out for each other along the way.
The Long Day
100 kilometres. First across the line.
The long stage of the Marathon des Sables is around 100 kilometres in a single push. Pierre finished it first in the amateur category.
He led the entire stage out front, side by side with one other runner the whole way. An amazing day, and one he will not forget.
Why Maverick
Out of the comfort zone.
Pierre and Wauthier are exactly the kind of people Maverick exists for. They get out there and they keep going.
They did not need a desert to prove anything. They chose one anyway, because stepping out of the comfort zone is where the good stuff happens. That is why they are Maverick ambassadors, and why we backed them from the start.
Ordinary people doing extraordinary things at their own scale. That is what Maverick is about.
The Cause
Running for someone else.
Pierre and Wauthier did not just run for themselves. Every kilometre was a fundraiser for SoliCap, a Belgian non-profit, with a goal of 100 euros per kilometre and 27,000 euros in total.
The money helps a wheelchair athlete and his sister get to a start line of their own, with the right equipment and people behind them. Maverick is behind it one hundred percent.
